FOUNDED AS THE
ACADEMY OF IDAHO
BANTAMS
Blossoming school spirit and
loyalty required the selection
of a team name. In 1906, an
unknown person decided on
the “Bantams”. A bantam is a
breed of chicken characterized
by its tiny size. Apparently
not thrilled with the Bantam
name, the Academy’s baseball
team decided to call itself the
“Tigers” in 1908.

With Tech’s rapid growth,
Red Hill became a symbol of
dreams, and one morning, the
“T” adorning the side of it was
replaced with the numeral “4,” a
representation of their desire for
the branch to become a standalone, four-year institution.
